Best Places to Take a Golf Holiday in Portugal

Portugal, known officially by the name República Portuguesa, attracts over 17 million tourists per annum. Lying on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the country boasts temperatures of over 26°C in the summer and a mild 14°C in mid-winter. The mainland is flanked by almost 1000 kilometers of coastline and host to some of the world’s largest waves; those travelling to Portugal are guaranteed dramatic scenery. The country is also a world leader in renewable energy, meaning that visitors need not be concerned about the environmental impact of their holiday.

Why is Portugal an Ideal Location for Golfers?

With an ideal climate for golfing throughout the year, Portugal is a popular destination for golf-centered holidays. Many visitors also choose to infuse their sun-kissed vacation with a spot of golfing. The country was the birthplace of some of the world’s first explorers such as Vasco de Gama and Bartholomew Diaz, so why not complete the historical cycle and explore it yourself?

Lisbon and The Algarve: Coastlines and Vistas

Older than Rome, the city has been continuously inhabited for over 3 millennia. More recently, its striking coast has become the most popular destination for golfing in Portugal.

  • Aroeira I – The conveniently-located course is set amongst a glorious nature reserve and surrounded by water. Designed by Frank Pennink, the course is often referred to as the “Lisbon Wentworth”.
  • Belas Clube de Campo – The Championship Golf Course is thought to be one of Portugal’s most meticulously designed courses. It is thriving with layered greenery.
  • Oitavos Dune – The par 71 course is situated beside the Atlantic Ocean at the westernmost point of mainland Europe. Golfers can experience the sublime on this course.

Porto: Culture and Luxury

Porto is a city lying on the coast of the northwest of Portugal. The picturesque city offers the opportunity for golfing excursions, with many experienced golfers favouring nearby courses.

  • Golfe de Amarante – The expansive, waterfall-steeped terrains reside in the luxurious Quinta da Deveza estate. Those who travel here can expect their sun-illuminated round to have a mountainous backdrop.
  • Vidago Palace Golf Course – The challenging par 72 course is dripping with history. Its parks and gardens, linked to the palatial hotel, provide an opulent adventure for those visiting.

Azores: Rustic and Rural

The Azores are an archipelago of Portugal. They are  located in the Atlantic, just a two-hour plane journey away from the mainland. The islands provide many extremely unique golfing experiences.

  • Furnas – The unforgettable course is a hidden gem in the golfing world. Its challenging green complexes are paired with more than a dash of natural beauty.
  • Batalha – The course combines three 9-holes, rendering it an outstanding golfing experience. The course becomes even more unique when its volcanic ground and views of the sea are considered.
